Cloud dictation means every sentence you speak — client names, medical details, passwords read aloud by mistake — is uploaded and processed by a third party. Does Wispr Flow work offline?
No. Wispr Flow transcribes in the cloud, so it needs an internet connection and sends your audio to its servers. Dictate runs its speech model on your Mac and works with no connection at all.
Is there a free Wispr Flow alternative?
Yes. Dictate is free during early access, and Apple's built-in Dictation is free as well. Open-source projects such as Handy also exist if you're comfortable with a less polished setup.
What do I give up by leaving Wispr Flow?
Mainly AI rewriting. Wispr Flow reformats and edits what you say using cloud language models; Dictate types what you said, with your own substitutions applied. If you have Claude Code installed you can switch on optional Claude cleanup for longer dictations — that part does use the internet.
